Beat Cabin Fever: Indoor Activities for Kids in Cedar Rapids

There are always days that we can’t wait for nice weather to arrive so we can escape the house and let the kids run off their energy outside. Unfortunately, the weather doesn’t always permit for that! If it’s one of those days where you just can’t remain inside any longer, you need some adult interaction, or just a change of scenery with the kids, check out this awesome list of Cedar Rapids indoor activities for kids and Cedar Rapids indoor playgrounds! {Be sure to call ahead and verify hours before heading out!}

Cedar Rapids Recreational Facilities

AirFx Trampoline Park

Age Range: All ages

Days/Times: Fall/Winter Hours (August 22, 2016- June 1, 2017): Open Jump: T-Th 4:00-9:00 p.m.  | Fri 4:00-10:00 p.m.  |  Sat 10:30 a.m.-10:00 p.m.  |  Sun 10:30 a.m.-8:00 p.m.

Cost: M-Th $10/1 hour, $13/90 minutes, $16/120 minutes  |  Weekend/Holidays: $12/1 hour, $16/90 minutes, $20/120 minutes

AirFX also offers Junior Jumpers, where kids under the age of 6 can jump around the whole park. This is offered Tuesday through Sunday from 9:00-10:15 a.m. for $5, with one adult free. They also have a kid zone for children under 48 inches during regular open jump times; which is $7 per hour. Kids and parents both love burning off energy at this Cedar Rapids indoor trampoline park!  

Cedar Rapids Ice Arena

The Cedar Rapids Ice Arena is a great place to go if you’re looking for indoor activities in Cedar Rapids during both the winter and summer months! 

Play Station 

Age Range: Crawling to 12 years

Dates/Times: T-Sat 10:00 a.m.-8:00 p.m.  |   Sun 11:00 a.m.-6:00 p.m.

Cost: Various day passes, family passes, or season passes offered.

The Play Station in Cedar Rapids offers a 3 level indoor play center specially designed for kids 12 and under. They also offer a laser maze and arcade.  On Tuesdays they have Tot Tuesdays from 10:00 a.m.-2:00 p.m. where children aged 1-4 can get in for $4.50 (parents are free). On Thursdays they have Family Fun Night from 4:00-8:00 p.m. with an admission rate of $5/person. Get more info on their events page.

Bender Pool Open Swim

Age Range: All ages

Open Swim is great for all ages and their baby pool is perfect for toddlers!! This is one of our favorite indoor swimming pools in Cedar Rapids!

Cedar Rapids Open Gym Times

Kids First Gymnastics

Age Range: Walking and up

Story Time is free and on the first Wednesday of each month from 9:15-10:15 a.m. The first half is story time and the second half is play time in the gym. You can stay and play for an extra hour from 10:15-11:15 a.m. for $5 per child. 

Preschool Open Gym is for ages 3-6 on Saturdays from 12:15-1:15 p.m. and costs $7 per child.

Parent’s Night Out is for ages 5-17 (boys 5-14) on Saturdays from 6:30-9:30 p.m. and pizza and drink are included for $18.

Somersaults Gymnastics 

Age Range: Walking and up

Tot Open Gym takes place on two Fridays/month from Noon-1:00 p.m. for kids ages 6 and under. Cost is $5/child. Click here for the schedule.

Open Gym is Saturdays from 12:30-2:30 p.m. for ages 5-18. It is a $10 fee for current students or a $15 fee for non-students (must attend with a student). 

Twisters Gymnastics

Age Range: Walking and up

Twisters offers a Parent-Tot Open Gym for children walking-5 years old on Tuesdays and Wednesdays from 11:00 a.m.-Noon for $5/child.

Open Gym is on Sundays from Noon-2:00 p.m. for children ages 5 and up and costs $8. You do not need to be a current student to attend open gym.

Cedar Rapids Area Indoor Playgrounds

Lindale Mall indoor playground

Age Range: Crawling to early school age

Let the kids explore indoors at the soft indoor play area in Lindale Mall in Cedar Rapids…located near Sears.

Coral Ridge Mall indoor playground

If you’re headed to the Coralville area, check out the soft indoor play area at Coral Ridge Mall…located by Barnes and Noble.

Kids’ Campsite

Age Range: Infant-early school age (must be 48″ tall or under)

Days/Times: M-F 9:00 a.m.-Noon, 4:00-8:00 p.m.  |  Sat & Sun 8:00 a.m.-6:00 p.m.

Cost: Free

The Kids’ Campsite is located at the North Liberty Community Center. It’s a soft indoor play area with a DOOR to keep your little ones contained!! 

Cedar Rapids Libraries & Museums

We are very fortunate to have such great local public libraries/museums in this area. The Cedar Rapids, Marion, and Hiawatha public libraries are very welcoming to families with children of all ages. They offer classes, activities and get-togethers for infants, toddlers, school-agers, teens, and adults. Below lists a couple of the opportunities at each library; check out their websites for more current activities.

Cedar Rapids Downtown Public Library

Age Range: All ages

Play, Sing, and Read is on Wednesdays from 10:00-11:00 a.m. and offers a story time and play/socialization for pre-k aged children. Mother Goose on the Loose is on Fridays from 9:30-10:30 a.m. and offers nursery rhymes and play time for children ages newborn-3 years old. Cedar Rapids Ladd Public Library

Age Range: All ages

Mother Goose on the Loose is on the 2nd and 4th Tuesdays of the month from 9:30-10:30 a.m. and offers nursery rhymes and play time for children ages newborn-3 years old. Preschool Story Time is on Thursdays from 10:00-10:30 a.m. and emphasizes Every Child Ready to Read elements (Talk, Play, Read, Write, and Sing). Hiawatha Public Library

Age Range: All ages

Cost: Free

Yoga Storytime is on Mondays at 10:00 a.m. and features stories, yoga poses that are child-friendly, and breathing exercises with fun stuffed friends. Play & Learn is on Thursdays from 10:00-11:30 a.m. and features play time for children ages 0-5 and their caregivers. Marion Public Library

Age Range: All ages

Days/Times: M-Th 9:30 a.m.-9:00 p.m.  |   Fri-Sat 9:30 a.m.-5:00 p.m.  |   Sun 2:00-5:00 p.m.

Marion Public Library Story Times include: Baby Time on Thursdays from 10:30-11:00 a.m. for ages birth to 18 months; Toddler Time on Tuesdays & Fridays from 10:00- 10:30 a.m. for ages 18 months to 3 years; Preschool Story Time on Tuesdays & Wednesdays from 10:45-11:15 a.m. for ages 3-5 years; and Family Time on Mondays at 6:30 p.m. for all ages.  You can see more of their family-friendly activities on their events page.

Cedar Rapids Museum of Art

Age Range: All ages

Cost: Adults-$7, Seniors(62+)-$6, College students (with ID)-$6, Children (ages 6-18)- $3, Children under age 6 are free

The Cedar Rapids Museum of Art offers a free event called Pajama Story Time once a month on either the 3rd or 4th Thursday of each month from 7:00-8:00 p.m. Children are welcome to wear pajamas and bring their stuffed animals. They also offer Off-the-Wall Art Boxes to help make the exhibits more interactive for kids of all ages. These boxes help make exhibits more accessible for children and include crafts, touchables, and even dress up options. The boxes are free and must be returned at the end of your visit. `

African American Museum of Iowa

Age Range: All ages 

Days/Times: M-Sat 10:00 a.m.-4:00 p.m.  |  Sun Closed

Cost: Adults $5, Seniors $4, Youth $2.50, Children under 5 FREE, annual membership

Learn about African American history in Cedar Rapids through the museum’s permanent exhibit, as well as their changing temporary exhibits. The museum also offers occasional learning opportunities for kids ages 5 and up. Check their events page for more details.

National Czech & Slovak Museum & Library

Age Range: All Ages

Days/Times: M-Sat 9:30 a.m.-4:00 p.m.  |  Sun Noon-4:00 p.m.

Cost: Adults $10, Seniors $9, Veterans $5, Students 14+ $5, Students 6-13 $3, 5 and under FREE

The NCSML in Cedar Rapids is a terrific place to take your kids to learn about Czech history, traditions, and culture. On the first Saturday of each month admission to the museum is free for students! They also offer great family-friendly events throughout the year so be sure to check out their events page.

The Iowa Children’s Museum

Age Range: All ages

Days/Times: T-Th, and Sat 10:00 a.m.-6:00 p.m.  |   Fri 10:00 a.m.-8:00 p.m.  |   Sun 11:00 a.m.-6:00 p.m.

Cost: 1 and up $8, Seniors $7, Under 1 FREE, annual membership

The Iowa Children’s Museum is located in the Coral Ridge Mall in Coralville and offers a variety of exhibits and programs for children of all ages to expand their imagination and be creative; you can easily spend the whole day there! Admission is free during STEM Family Free Nights on the last Friday night of the month! Check out their events page for more event info!

Cedar Rapids Movie Theater Deals

Collins Road Movie Theatre 

Age Range: All ages

Days/Times: check out their website for current showtimes

Cost: $5/matinee (movies before 6pm), $6/evening, $1-additional for 3D movies

Collins Road Movie Theatre in Cedar Rapids is currently offering $4 Tuesdays, all day, all movies. Collins Road Movie Theatre is a locally owned theatre offering movies not previously shown in Cedar Rapids and second-run hits!

Galaxy 16 Theatre 

Age Range: All ages

Cost: $5 Tuesdays offers $5 blockbuster movies with concession food discounts. Early Bird pricing is for movies prior to 11:00 a.m.  Cost is also $5.

Vinton Movie Theater 

Age Range: All ages

Days/Times: On the Vinton Movie Theatre website you can download their monthly calendar for their current movie showings. This is a great small town movie theater that plays a couple different family-friendly movies throughout each month.

Cost: $3 for 2D movies and $4 for 3D movies.

Classes at Baby Time

Classes: Birth, Baby, and Beyond has recently ended their retail sale side of their store and are moving, but they will still be offering classes and groups. They offer various classes for each age group including Music and More, Motor Skills playgroup, and Baby Signs. Get class details here.

Wiggle Wednesdays at The Pointe School of Dance 

Age Range: 2-4 years

Cost: Free

The Pointe Dance offers Wiggle Wednesdays on the first Wednesday of every month from 10:00-10:45 a.m. for ages 2-4. It is a free class that includes a story and dance time; registration is required.

New Bo Market

Age Range: All ages

New Bo Market in Cedar Rapids is a great place to explore and find some new favorite local food options, art, and events. On Friday nights from 6:00-8:00 p.m. during the months of November-April New Bo offers free family-friendly movie showings.

Indian Creek Nature Center

Age Range: All ages

Days/Times: Mon CLOSED  |  T-Th 9:00 a.m.-4:00 p.m.  |  Fri 9:00 a.m.-8:00 p.m.  |  Sat 9:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m.  |  Sun Noon-4:00 p.m.

Wikiup Hill Learning Center

Cost: Free

Wikiup Hill is located near Toddville, just on the NW side of Cedar Rapids. Wikiup Hill offers various events and learning opportunities throughout the week for different age groups, including options for both indoor and outdoor weather. Options includes a bird viewing area, wildlife viewing area, interpretive trails, observation deck, wetland boardwalk, prairie, woodland, and savanna habitats, Native American Mounds, cross-country skiing, and more.

Potter’s Obsession 

Age Range: Approximately 4 years old and up

Dates/Times: Hours are seasonal; Call to determine hours (319) 743-9824 or visit their Facebook page

Cost: $7 studio fee + price of pottery

Potter’s Obsession is a great local shop where you pick a piece of pottery (mug, frames, bowls, vases, piggy banks, and more), you get to design and paint it, then they will glaze and fire it for you to pick up later.

    You can also visit the Helen G Nassif YMCA, Stoney Point YMCA or Marion YMCAs for a guest price and enjoy open swim and open gym times. The max guest fee for families is $20. Reduced community swim fee on Fridays is $3 for 0-18 and $4 for 19 and above. For available open swim and open gym times visit their website at
